The Angel
A psychedelic coming of age dramedy, along the lines of Almost Famous™, that gradually shifts into creeping psychological horror akin to 2001 A Space Odyssey™ and Annihilation™, in a genre bending cautionary tale about what happens when one becomes too desperate in their search for purpose.
After a psychedelic trip, depressed Melvin McMurty throws away his old life in pursuit of spiritual enlightenment, all the while convinced that an otherworldly entity has chosen him to be its avatar.
Listless Melvin McMurty is forced by his family into group therapy, where he becomes enamored with the outgoing, prickly Mitzi, and the kindly but withdrawn Hanna. Though ignored by Mitzi, Melvin grows close with Hanna and the two soon begin to date. It seems as if Melvin has finally found purpose. Sadly, Melvin can’t help but default to his old directionless self, and Hanna is forced to end their relationship. Inconsolable, Melvin turns to Mitzi, who directs Melvin to the life changing world of psychedelics and, for a fee, guides him on his very first ayahuasca trip. Afterwards, Melvin decides to radically change everything about himself. He fully embraces the psychedelic community, leaves home, and lives full time with Mitzi’s hippy commune, now going by the name “Flowerbird”.
But something isn’t quite right. From his very first drug trip, Melvin suspects that some sort of otherworldly being is attempting to make contact with him. What exactly it wants, he isn’t sure; but it seems attracted to him. Soon Melvin’s savings dwindle, and the commune threatens to evict him. With nowhere else to turn, Melvin attempts to make a deeper connection with the entity: a choice that sends him hurtling towards an inexplicable nightmare that may exist only in his head.
